Wine shop: Staff's 'natural' wine picks

— 30 April 2012
The staff at our four stores are bursting with plenty of wonderful wine knowledge. We asked some of our Wine Shop experts to share their favourite 'natural' or 'real' wines and what best to enjoy them with.

Sam from Manchester Exchange
DOMAINE CHAVIN Chateauneuf du Pape
£42.99

This father and son team have managed to create a fantastic Chateauneuf wine that is becoming a real favourite of staff and customers alike. Its blend of about 82% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre, Syrah and Vaccarese from vines that average around 50 years old with the oldest being around 70 years. This provides the wine with a beautiful richness which combines amazingly with the full bodied spicy texture that is perfect for any meaty dish.

Ferenc from Oxford Street
CAMBRIDGE ROAD Pinot Noir 2009
£33.99

Cambridge Road Vineyard is a small, five and a half-acre estate in Martinborough in the North Island of New Zealand. Javier from Oxford Street
ULYSSE COLLIN Blanc de Blanc NV
£59.99

Guy from Manchester Trafford
GONON St Joseph 2005
£32.99

A great example of a young champenois vigneron following a non interventionist wine making philosophy. Long barrel fermentation with indigenous yeast, un-fined and unfiltered, this champagne is a perfect example of the expression of Chardonnay in Champagne. It has citrus and green apple notes with an elegant minerality and brioche complexity. Well balanced acidity and lingering on the mouth.   I've selected a wine that perfectly fits into the natural ethos - minimal intervention on the part of the winemaker, very low levels of added sulphur, and a commitment to organic viticulture; in short, the type of wine that you don't often see in the 21st century. Black fruits, garrigue spice and minerals on the nose, leading to a palate of dark cherry and mulberry, with a hint of meatiness and a touch of iron, mineral character. Serve with red meats, stews and cheeses.

Dawn from Oxford Street
DAUMAS GASSAC Rouge 2006
£31.99

Marcin from Oxford Street
LUCY MARGAUX VINEYARDS Domaine Lucci Red
£18.99

Gassac Rouge is a big wine made from predominately Cabernet Sauvignon that takes time to come round, but it will reward the keeper when it does.   An unusual blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Shiraz, sculpted to emulate the Rhone style. This wine is much more individual than a typical template, offering softer tannins, ripeness and sweet berries. The spice follows nicely with some earthy characters and a long dry finish. Enjoy with food, especially lamb.
