| English Sparkling wine is fast becoming a major competitor to the champagne market. Chapel Down Brut is made in Kent, the producer has deservedly won Winemaker of the Year three times. I think this is down to the traditional methods used to produce this quality NV brut, the same process that has been used in Champagne for centuries. Chapel Down Brut NV has a floral fruity fizz on the nose, with citrus flavours on the pallet, acacia and honey on the finish. It's the perfect alternative to Champagne during the current economic climate. |

Summer feels like time to reach for something fresh, simple and crisp, doesn't it? Northern Spanish and Portuguese whites are perfect for this; often made with indigenous grape varieties, they are usually light, food friendly and very good value indeed. Vinho Verde comes from northern Portugal, and is perhaps the epitome of an easy drinking, summer wine. This expression from Quinta da Raza is a blend of Arinto and Azal; just off dry, with a subtle spritz, and bold, refreshing flavours of green apple, citrus fruit and a certain grassiness. |

FONTELELLERA 1489 Vino Nobile Montepulciano
£10.79
|
| With summer almost finally upon us, it's time for a food friendly wine which will go down a storm at a BBQ. This wine is named after the historic Medici Royal property known as the Barco reale. It is 70% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Canaiolo, and the baby brother to the estate wine Villa de Capezzana. Produced in Carmignano in Tuscany, this estate has been producing wine for over 1200 years. Expect lots of cherry, hints of spice and oak plus some acidity which will match up to any meat cooked over the coals. |
|
Not to be confused with the rather bland grape variety of the same name, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of the finest wine producing regions in Tuscany. Using the Sangiovese grape (like its perhaps more illustrious neighbours, Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti), this example spends two years in oak before release, and offers a smooth, well structured palate of black cherries, plums and vanilla, supported with soft tannins and good acidity. Serve with beef, game and pecorino cheese. |
