People are at the heart of the way Selfridges does business. We are a family owned business and we extend our family commitments to a wider circle of team members and partners.
We are well known for the surprises we offer our customers in our stores – from ballerinas en pointe for the birthday of the shoe gallery, frogmen marching in the aisles for our Project Ocean campaign to book readings in the Ultralounge for our Words, Words, Words celebration. This energy and fun comes from the creative commitment our team brings to every detail – large and small – of our vision.
Everyone who works at Selfridges contributes to our success and we greatly value their talent, skills and energy – without these we couldn’t go beyond ordinary to extraordinary.
Gordon Selfridge pioneered the ‘theatre of retail’ and we continue to grow that vision of amazing experiences. We are all about discovery, display and interaction - from collaborations with leading artists to virtual innovations.
We all prosper when we fuel that inspiration and commitment in our team.
OUR people
We want to help our people be the best they can be. So from day one we support them and offer guidance and the chance of developing skills. We are especially proud of the career opportunities our people have and we have many examples of people who have been promoted several times within Selfridges.
Recognising and rewarding
We offer competitive salaries and have for several years given above industry standards pay reviews. We acknowledge great work and customer service and we act on it: this year we are adding a dash of surprise to the way we reward our people for great performance.
Talent
Talent attracts talent and we are fortunate to have some outstanding people in all areas of our team - people who keep raising the bar on the standards of creative solutions they deliver. We are now taking further steps to develop and discover new talent. We are also exploring the introduction of the Selfridges Apprenticeship programme.
Listening
Selfridges is a family run business: Our team members give very positive feedback about the interaction they have with the Weston family.
We are improving feedback in 2012 with a new annual opinion survey and Directors’ roadshows to increase contact and enable people to contribute ideas.
Creating a great working environment
- We recently refurbished the entire team environment
- We are creating a quiet zone for all team members and set up the Selfridges choir
- We support our team in their sustainable choices with season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme and bike parking and showers at Oxford Street
- We help our people to give back, through community volunteering, for the causes they feel strongly about.
Other pillars
Selfridges is building its sustainable business on four pillars and is working hard to develop change around each of these.
